Rainbow Baby Newborn | Lynn Puzzo Photography

1 in 4 women experience the excruciating loss of a pregnancy or baby. 2000 women a DAY in the US lose a baby. 700,000 per year. Seven hundred thousand. Yet, how many of us talk about it?

I am 1 in 4. All I ever wanted to be was a mama. When people would ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up, that was always my answer : a mama. I became pregnant with my first baby at 22 years old – I was still a baby myself in many ways. Naivety being one of them. I was aware of NO ONE in my family EVER having a miscarriage – so it was never a thought. Back then – 1998 – early ultrasounds were NOT routine. So at 12 weeks, we skipped into my OB appointment expecting to hear a baby’s heartbeat – and left in tears. While the doctor tried so hard to be reassuring with me (maybe its too early/dates are wrong, could be the position of the baby, etc.) and scheduled me to return in two weeks to try again – I knew. I am very intuitive with my body – and I just knew I would not be bringing home a baby in 6 months. Two weeks later, we learned (at 14 weeks now at this point) it was a blighted ovum – and my body had already started to miscarry. (on my 23rd birthday, no less) A week later, I was in the OR and almost died – but that is a story for another day.

7 months later I was pregnant again, and 9 (dramatic, nervous, stress filled, anxious) months after that I was holding my beautiful 8lb baby girl in my arms. Although it was not a term used back then, my rainbow baby had finally arrived. After another early loss many years later, my tiny sweet 6lb rainbow baby boy arrived to complete my little family.

1 in 8 women suffer from infertility. How unfair is it that someone could want a baby so bad, and not be able to conceive one? Month after month of negative tests. Or worse, conceive over and over only to experience the devastation of losing it again and again. I have watched family and friends go through not being able to conceive – and I have watched friends lose babies. This actually led to me becoming a surrogate, (experiencing more loss, failed IVF cycles and negative tests) carrying 3 babies and giving two couples the babies they could not have on their own. My way of “even-ing the score” in the universe, if you will. 3 more rainbow babies to brighten the darkness.

What is a “rainbow baby”?

A rainbow baby is the term given to a baby who has been born after a miscarriage, stillbirth, or infant loss. After a storm, comes the rainbow…

“A rainbow baby is the understanding that the beauty of a rainbow does not negate the ravages of the storm. When a rainbow appears, it doesn’t mean the storm never happened or that we are not still dealing with its aftermath. It means something beautiful and full of light has appeared in the midst of the darkness and clouds. Storm clouds may still hover, but the rainbow provides a counterbalance of color, energy, and hope.”

As you can see, rainbow babies hold a special place in my heart. It has been on my heart for quite some time to give back (again) in some way to honor rainbow babies. Most of the time, I photograph happy, healthy pregnancies and babies for my clients. But I have also been honored to photograph several rainbow babies in my career as well. One of which was my sweet, beautiful niece who my brother and his wife were blessed with after trying for eight years to have a baby.
