What is a “Rainbow Baby”?
Rainbow baby photography holds a special place in Lynn’s heart. Did you know that 1 in 4 women experiences the excruciating loss of a pregnancy or baby? Two thousand women a DAY in the US lose a baby. This means that over 700,000 expectant parents are going through this annually. Yet, how many of us talk about it? A rainbow baby is a baby who has been born after a miscarriage, stillbirth, or infant loss.
“A rainbow baby is the understanding that the beauty of a rainbow does not negate the ravages of the storm. When a rainbow appears, it doesn’t mean the storm never happened or that we are not still dealing with its aftermath. It means something beautiful and full of light has appeared in the midst of the darkness and clouds. Storm clouds may still hover, but the rainbow provides a counterbalance of color, energy, and hope.” – Author Unknown
My Rainbow Baby Story
All I ever wanted was to be a mama. When people asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, my answer was always “a mama”. I became pregnant with my first baby at 22 years old and was still a baby myself. I had never even heard of anyone in my family EVER having a miscarriage, so it was never a thought. At 12 weeks, we skipped into my OB appointment expecting to hear a baby’s heartbeat and left in tears.
While the doctor tried so hard to be reassuring to me (it’s too early, dates are wrong, could be the position of the baby, etc.) and scheduled me to return in two weeks to try again – I knew. I am very intuitive with my body, and I just knew I would not be bringing home a baby in 6 months. Two weeks later, we learned (at 14 weeks now) that it was a blighted ovum and my body had already started to miscarry.
I was pregnant again 7 months later. Then, the following August I was holding my beautiful 8lb baby girl in my arms. Although it was not a term used back then, my rainbow baby had finally arrived. Several years after another early loss, my tiny sweet 6lb rainbow baby boy arrived to complete my little family.
My Way of Giving Back
Rainbow babies hold a special place in my heart. Most of the time, I photograph my clients’ happy, healthy pregnancies and babies. But then there are times when one of my moms receives the terrible news of losing her baby. I feel honored to have some of these moms in my studio later when they have their rainbow babies. How unfair is it that someone could want a baby so bad and not be able to conceive one? Months of hoping and expensive treatments. I have watched family and friends not being able to conceive and I have watched friends lose babies. My brother and his wife tried for over eight years to have my beautiful niece, Aoife, pictured above. These experiences are what led to me becoming a surrogate where I carried three babies that brought two couples’ babies they could not have on their own.
